Legal and Financial Assistance through Cancer Council Tasmania
Cancer Council Tasmania’s Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS) aims to assist Tasmanians diagnosed with cancer when they are undergoing treatment or receiving palliative care who are experiencing financial hardship. This assistance is provided as a result of the generous donation from the Tasmanian community and in partnership with Telstra and Aurora Energy. The program offers a $300 payment of an unpaid telephone or Aurora bill, within a 12 month period after referral from a health professional. Support for families, children and young adults is also available, as are four pro bono programs matching clients to appropriate service providers for legal, financial and/or workplace advice. Gran's Van is a non-profit organisation running free food and hygiene services to support those in the community who are economically disadvantaged. Our programs provide a safe and inclusive space along with relief from some of the basic pressures of sourcing nutritious food and access to laundry services and personal cleanliness. All Gran's Van services are staffed by volunteers and we welcome applications from new volunteers to join us in serving the local community. The Devonport Service is on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Coles Beach 6pm to 6.20pm 5 Coles Beach Road main carpark. A professional staff member from the Cancer Council facilitates each group, sometimes in conjunction with a health professional specialising in the particular type of cancer or volunteers who have undergone specific training.

We understand that hair loss is a distressing side effect of cancer treatment for many people. A wig library is offered as part of our Support Services and wigs can be accessed at each of our centres in Hobart, Launceston and Devonport. Wigs are fitted by a trained staff member or volunteer and can be borrowed for as long as needed. We also have a range of turbans and headwear available. Please note that this is a free service. For more information, or to discuss your wig requirements, please call our Support Team on 1300 65 65 85.
